Review of Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann

Last night I picked up Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann because it was something I grabbed to read when my boyfriend reads at night when Im at his place. I have finished 75% of it and will finish the rest of it tonight..

Synopsis:

The small town of Cryer’s Cross is rocked by tragedy when an unassuming freshman disappears without a trace. Kendall Fletcher wasn’t that friendly with the missing girl, but the angst wreaks havoc on her OCD-addled brain.

When a second student goes missing—someone close to Kendall’s heart—the community is in an uproar. Caught in a downward spiral of fear and anxiety, Kendall’s not sure she can hold it together. When she starts hearing the voices of the missing, calling out to her and pleading for help, she fears she’s losing her grip on reality. But when she finds messages scratched in a desk at school—messages that could only be from the missing student who used to sit there—Kendall decides that crazy or not, she’d never forgive herself if she didn’t act on her suspicions.

Something’s not right in Cryer’s Cross—and Kendall’s about to find out just how far the townspeople will go to keep their secrets buried. (from the inside cover)

My Review:
I liked the characters, the main character at times was believable and interesting to read. Her interactions with other characters helped build her background and gave life to other characters. I enjoyed the character development between Kendall and Jacian and the way they learn a lot from each other. I like the description of the town and the towns people like its a real tiny town.
The last 50 pages of the book is where the story finally takes a turn for what you've been waiting for. It wraps up nice and quickly.
I enjoyed reading the book it was a quick read and had a nice story and a little bit of a twist and paranormal to it to make you interested.
3.5/5 I'd say in this kittens opinion. :)

Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I got a copy of this book through Netgalley so I'm gonna start reading it today. :)

Finished reading this while waiting for a friend to get off work. I really enjoyed the story line.. it was slightly new and inventive.. which made me enjoy the plot.

The main character is quite interesting in that she's half demon/half human but not in the traditional sense. She transforms in cycles from human to paranormal. I really enjoyed that about the book, it was something I hadn't read before.

The story is of Kali who helps out a girl who is infected with a chupacabra (in this story are memory/blood sucking creatures that end up killing off its host) by convincing it to take her on as a host instead. When she does they find out that the chupacabra has a tracking device and a Research Facility was trying to do some test runs with this specimen and now is after the girls.

There is a colorful cast of characters from a cheerleader, to a psychic and tons of supernatural characters. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Kali and the psychic. It was like a real high school friendship except older for there time since they both.. had the weight of the world on there shoulders.

I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend picking it up.

Dying Memories by David Zeltzerman

I won a contest last month where I could choose any two books from a certain publisher, and I choose this book cause it looked interesting. I will say though not paranormal, it was enjoyable and a fun fast paced read.

The story is a thriller about a journalist who happens across a story much bigger then himself and the world around him. It's face paced and twisted as you follow along with his trying to out a company with more spooks and people working for them then he can keep up with.

I loved the characters conviction and the fact that everyone around him is believing he is slowly falling into madness. I love watching it from both sides cause you know the character is on the right path, yet you are only half sure because the book constantly puts doubt in your head. I enjoyed the ride.

The book is full of action, suspense, twists and turns and lots of fun spy paranoia.

Definitely pick this book up. It's a fun read if you like this sorta thing :)

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott

I bought this like 2 weeks ago and had been checking the mail everyday since..and finally it arrived today and since I'm super sick. I figure might as well lay down and read. This book first off is a super quick read. So if you like something on the slightly morbid a little bit intense you might want to search this book out.

Living Dead Girl was a 2009 ALA Best Book for young adults and has been picked for a ton more awards. I can truly understand why. It's a very intense novel.

The story is of 15 year old "Alice" who was kidnapped by a man at 10 years old and it's written from her point of view telling you not only about her life now but the last 5 years she has endured. As you read you feel pain for this little girl who is dead inside, who longs for freedom but believes there is no escape. You feel hatred towards the man who has taken her and made her to believe all the things she now holds as truth in her life.

I don't want to give away too much about the story because its just so unbelievable at times and so heartbreaking that I want you to pick it up yourself and go through all the emotions the writer has been so good to portray.

I can't imagine the pain and despair she feels it's so moving. I was so mesmerized by the book I just had to read it cover to cover. It's definitely something you want to pick up if you are on the intense side of enjoyment in reading.

Lush by Natasha Friend

So for Banned Book Week I ended up winning the book Lush by Natasha Friend. A book I have been interested in picking up for a while. The book is a real quick read.

The character is from a family where her father is an alcoholic and she is looking for someone who can relate and talk to her. She starts writing notes to another girl in the library asking for help. It's a coming of age, coming to realize about life story.

At the beginning of the book Sam makes some comments about realizing she's growing into becoming a woman.. I think a lot of woman can relate to and remember noticing..
For me at least, I was 5'1 69 lbs up until high school, I was a runt basically. I hit high school and grew 2 inches and gained some weight and filled out.. and I spent the next 4 years trying to make guys not notice me. I was so uncomfortable in my skin.

Excerpt : From that moment on, I have made a point to ignore my body. Clothes: the baggier, the better. Need to be naked? Lights out.

That was me. I grew out of it.. but it surely rang true for me.

I really like the way you hear the story from what feels like a 13 year old girls point of view. I don't want to ruin the 2 big shockers in the story so I won't tell you much about the rest of the story.. but really it's a quick read and if you've dealt with alcohol or addiction in your family you can definitely relate.. or even just been an awkward teenager trying to fit in.

I liked the book. It's simple to read and narratively intriguing. I'd say if you pick it up and are at all interested give it a chance. You might enjoy it

Extra Time

Today I had some extra time and ended up waiting at Barnes and Nobles are 3 hours.. so I wrote down the name of every book I want to read in the Paranormal YA section. I made a list of like over 50 books.. but it was interesting to see so many books I want to read but haven't got the chance to yet.

Fins are Forever is on that list. The book looks really great and for even more excitement the book is about mermaids. I love mermaids.

I can't even list here all the books, but tonight I'm going to add them all to my amazon wishlist so I can track the prices as I go.

In other news Nicholas Sparks new book came out today. "The Best of Me" I am looking forward to it. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Might grab it while I am out tonight.

Other then that read the first story in the new George R R Martin editted short story book, "Down These Strange Streets". The story by Charlaine Harris. I liked the characters and the setting a party. Definitely interesting and worth picking up since it has multiple authors of note in it.. off the top of my head Patricia Briggs, Diana Gabaloon, Carrie Vaughn and so many more.

Banned Book Week

I can't believe some of the books that have been banned or have been in controversy. It is crazy how so many people have to hate things they dislike or don't understand.

I find a lot of good in books like The Lovely Bones. It shows the dangers in society. The stress in families. It shows someone who may have not been careful before that life is precious and you should be careful with it.

Or ridiculous bannings like the Dictionary.. please people are you really that crazy?

I enjoy reading a lot of the banned books, not because they were banned but because in general they are good books.

So tell me what's your favorite banned book?

An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris

I love True Blood.. but I haven't been able to get past a page in the Sookie Stackhouse novels.. and it makes me crazy cause I really want to read the series.

Book jacket info.. when I figure out where it went to in my room

So I went and picked up An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris in an attempt to see if maybe it was just the series or if it really was her writing style. And I must say I really am enjoying this book. This is the 3rd book of the series.. I haven't read the others and its not affecting me cause it really is seemless in she lets you know anything you need to know

I like the characters, I like the interactions. I like the ideas she came up with for her characters. Im liking the plot and its progression. So Im happy with it..

4/5 its a good read and a quick read.

Watchers in the Night by Jenna Black

Im reading Watchers in the Night by Jenna Black right now.

I really enjoyed this novel. I read the entire book during a bus ride (a quite long bus ride) to the mall to pick up some promotional stuff.

I liked the main characters ambition and her never give up attitude. I liked the way the author wrote a background to why the characters were the way they were. It was suspenseful and a little bit predictable. But the twists and turns in the book were fun to read and the relationships were believable.

I would give this book a 3.7/5 stars. Its a quick nice read. Definitely worth picking up.

Cinder and Ella

I feel truly bad. i was part of the blog tour for this book and had to take some time away from my computer and never got the chance to post about it.

Cinder and Ella

I read and must say really loved this book. I love retellings of fairy tales that are vastly different from the other versions. And let me tell you. This book is vastly different from the Cinderella you are used to.

I loved her development of the characters, the supernatural aspects. She wrote a really riveting story with twists and fun. I can't wait til it is released in November so I can hand my mother a copy of the book.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.I was not compensated in any ways for writing this review.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks Review

Right now I'm halfway through Nicholas Sparks book Safe Haven and let me tell you it is as good as his other ones.. I am a huge fan of his in general.. you could catch me in high school sitting on a bench in front of my favorite donut place waiting for my mother to pick me up and one of his books in hand crying my eyes out as I read.

Festival of Books Followup

I was rather sad about the Festival of Books this year.. I walked around most of the Festival and didnt really see any booths for paranormal romance, teen paranormal it was few and far between other then big book sellers or small book shops that might have had a book or two.. I found mostly religious booths and memoir booths. I left with quite a few memoirs that look interesting to me signed by the authors.. but nothing in my reading genre other then a bookmark for a sci fi book.

I did win a set of tickets to see a play at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in LA.. and lots of people loved my cat outfit and I got lots of walking in.. so it wasnt a waste of a day, but certainly my excitement for the show was not anywhere near what it ended up being.

I also won something from Focus Features.. but I got a text from them as I drove up into my Nans's driveway to have dinner with her so I wasnt going to go all the way back and park, dont even think I could have made it back in the 15 minutes til it closed to get it.. so I was a little bummed about that..

But all in all underwhelming but a nice day because I got to talk to writers, look at books, and see family.

Review of Songs of Love and Death

Songs of Love and Death editted by George R R Martin and Gardner Dozors. with stories from Neil Gaiman, Diana Garbaldon, Jum Butcher, Marjorie M. Lui, Jacqueline Carey, Carrie Vaughn and many more.

Im reading this short story compilation right now.. and am loving it.. A lot of the stories are by authors that I know well and some by author's don't know anything about.

I will tell you it's very enjoyable to read. I love short story comp's because I can read a story in between other things I'm doing and not lose anything from the story or get sucked into 2 hours of reading when I should be doing other stuff.

So far :
Love Hurts by Jim Butcher - our lovable Harry in a short story about love and lust.. cute story.. enjoyable to read and the characters are likable, never having read the Dresden Files ( I want too, its on my list) It definitely made me want to pick up the series.. I will soon for sure 4/5 stars

The Marrying Maid by Jo Beverly - Kinda drawn out in some parts.. not really my cup of tea.. but still well written and a quick read.. interesting twist on a old tale.. which is what I enjoyed most about it. 3/5 stars

Rooftops by Carrie Vaughn - Enjoyable to read interesting.. want to look into her as an author now because I like her superhero concept.. but the end wrapped up kinda funny.. but other then that was engaging and the character believable and a bit likable ( im a bit biased because Im a huge theatre person and the story is about a playwright's opening night). 3.5/5 stars

Hurt Me by M. L. N. Hanover - I liked the concept of this story and I loved the ending.. I thought it but wasn't certain that was where the writer was going til the end. I liked the character and the neighbors insight into the situation. Very interesting and engaging. 4.2/5 stars

Demon Lover by Cecelia Holland - The story is interesting and has a twist thats enjoyable. It's cool that the characters each have a background to them. I liked the fantasy part of the story.. and the way the people in the world were frightened.. I also liked the message it ended with. 3.7/5 stars

I havent been up on this I always do this lose steam because I have a really hectic life.. but I really love reading so Im gonna try to read 1-3 books a week.. I can polish off a book in 2-4 hours so I shouldn't be so lazy.. so goal for May is 15 books and 15 reviews.. Lets see if I can push myself.

H is for Happy Endings

I think when I was younger I read because of happy endings. I love a book with a happy ending where the hero gets the heroine.. and everyone lives happily ever after.

I do love books with sad endings though as well.. I love to cry.. or at least I love to get emotional.

Maybe i will add to this.. but i have food poisoning so im gonna stop here and lay back down..

G is for Glamourous

I think when I first started reading thats what I was looking for, characters who led glamourous lifes.. who could afford all the things in life that I couldn't. Now I always find characters that wear $300 dollar shoes a different pair every night of the week to seem a tad unreal unless the character has a real reason to have the bank to roll that kind of life.
I love the glamour of a book. The characters and their soiree's and lives with things I can only dream of. It's nice to be taken to a world for a short while that has nice clothes, cars, people instead of my normal clothing, shoes, used car life. Not that I'm complaining I love the people in my life :)

Mixed Blessings by Lainey Baincroft Review

I received this book from an author and asked for nicely for a review. So this is the next book I am reviewing.

The synopsis on Smashwords.com

Daniela Blessing’s ability to see crimes through the eyes of victims is a mixed blessing. She thinks she’s a handmaiden of Fate, but when Vincent Gabriele accosts her one sunny morning he calls it eye for an eye justice. He’s willing to keep her secrets—if she helps him. Despite his blackmail tactics, Danni would help, except her psychic abilities evaporate whenever Vincent is around. As truths emerge unlocking Vincent’s past, some of Danni’s history is also revealed. They’ve been intrinsically tied in the past, and their future is about to become a Destiny neither of them expected.

My Review. 4/11 - have severe food poisoning.. so blogging will be on hold.. except my extremely short a-z posts so i dont get behind..
Going to say that just the description caught me. definitely looks like something I would be interested in reading. Come back by shortly.. for my review :)

F is for Fire

I love me a little bit of fiery romance in a novel. I admit.. I kinda like the hunky man saving the day.. I love fiery romance scenes.. It makes me smile and think happy thoughts. :)
I love when a character is fiery and passionate about something/anything. I love fiery people it's gotta be there for me... doesn't matter what they're fiery about.. it could be killing for all i care as long as they're fiery and passionate about it.. (not that i condone killing.. so dont do it)

E is for Engaging

A book has to be engaging to get me to want to read it.. Usually has to have a catcher at the beginning something to catch my attention and reel me in so I keep reading. I love books that start with humor cause I love humor. I love a good joke. I love sarcasm.. I'm super sarcastic in real life and my boyfriend is worst then me when it comes to joking around.

Books bring you to another world and fulfill that need to get away from real life if just for an hour or two each day.

D is for Dark Places

I'm a huge fan of dark scary places.. it's probably why I love paranormal and fantasy books. There is a world where things aren't always as they seem. Dark Alleys are either just as scary as real life or the place where to wonderfully tempting vampires have a meet each night before they go and stalk their pray.

I love horror books set in dark scary towns that have lots of foreboding in them.. It's always a fun place to be .. well not for the characters but for the readers. I love the way a setting of a book can set the mood and make or break a story really.

Kitten

C is for Character Development

I am really one for character development. You have to have a character in a book that is someone you can really see as real to get pulled into the story.. they have to have flaws and strengths like real people. It's I guess why movies are usually more popular then the book, people have an easier time with relating to someone they can see rather then someone they have to imagine in there head.

I am a sucker for character development.. I think David Eddings in his series The Elenium does a fantastic job of bringing to life the main character Sparhawk.. who I know I've mentioned before but I'm a really huge fan. Sparhawks character is so well developed and through the series you see the character grow and change which sucks you in.. I have the Elenuim sitting on my bed so I can take it to my boyfriends and let him read it because I can't stop telling people to read it cause I feel that strongly about it.

Review Undead and Unappreciated by Mary Janice Davidson

This is my first review on here.. suggested by someone I've known since I was a wee one. She told me its one of her favorites so I went over to the Library and picked it up.

Synopsis from the front flap of the copy I got from the library.
Most women would love to live as royalty, but Betsy has found that being vampire queen has more problems then perks, except for always being awake for the Midnight Madness sales. It may be easy to find blood (yuck) in the dark of night, but try finding a strawberry smoothie. And employees at her nightclub Scratch have giving her nothing but grief since she killed their former boss. Some people....
But Betsy's "life" takes an interesting turn at a shower for her wicked stepmother, who lets if slip that Betsy has a long-lost half sister. Now twenty years old, this would just so happens to be the devil's daughter and destined to rule the world.

My Review -
Last night it was snuggle and read night with the boyfriend.. so I finally got a chance to pick this up. I must say very humorous and a quick read. I finished it before bed.. it's only 271 pages.

The Main character Betsy is funny, sarcastic, lovable, emotional and enjoyable. Mary Janice really does a good job of wrapping you up in her world. I love the interactions between all the characters, the nicknames the happiness, anger, fear and sadness all the characters go through.

There's a lot of internal dialogue in the book so you get to see a lot of what she is thinking which is fun cause she's a very funny character.

I enjoyed the story a lot. It was very engaging, sarcastic, funny, thoughtful, interesting. The characters had life and brought you in. The story ran quickly while you got to know a little bit about different characters and the backstories. Which was fun and entertaining. You also got to learn a little bit about the lives of the characters and what they enjoy and collect. (Betsy likes clothing and especially shoes.)

I like that this book is a light read with humor and some romance. It doesn't take itself too seriously. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick read. (but don't be like me.. pick up the first 2 first.. I'm going to do that.. when I go back to the library.)

I really can't wait to read the rest of the series. I definitely give this a paw up :)

B is for Bloodsucking

I'm part of the Vampire Challenge 2011.. and now I'm on a search for vampire books. I know I will pick up the Charlaine Harris Books because I've been meaning to read them. But other then that Im not really sure where to got from there.. I have been out of the loop for a while on good books.. so now here I am .. searching searching searching for 20 books I can't wait to review.. let alone can't wait to read. I love to read and I love Vampires.. they've always been a fascination of mine.. maybe cause I find neck biting so sexy. I mean I did have a thing all through high school for the man that played Dracula at Universal Studios. I was crushed to find out he was
married after he spent so many days wooing me :( but it didn't darken my love the bloodsucking men of the night.

So help me out.. I'm looking for some good Vampire books to read. I don't mind dark, romantic, bloody, scary.. I'd prefer not sparkly..
Well I will go out and search some today .. Let's see what I come up with :)

Looking to have me review?

If you'd like for me to review a book then you may email ebooks to me at raynekitten@gmail.com... or you can send an email to me and ask for my mailing address if you'd like to send a real copy of the book. If you'd like for my review to be put up on my blog on a certain date then please make sure you let me know this, as well. Please give me a couple of weeks if you'd like it reviewed by a certain date. I am willing to review everything. Please when emailing me put in the Title Book for review.. or something like that.. so I dont miss it.

Ebooks and old paper books are both fine with me. I have a amazon kindle that I use to read ebooks, which means I can read any form of ebook. I prefer kindle versions, but .pdf is also fine... but I can make other forms work. I prefer non ebooks only cause then I can carry then with me when I'm out, but I won't turn down a ebook.

I review books honestly, and whether I pay for them, they are sent to me, or I rent them from the library it will not affect the review. I will try to say nice things about books I don't particularly like. I figure you can always find at least one good thing to say about anything. But know I will be honest in how I write my review, since they are my own words and opinions.

Books I got today at the Library...

Ok.. so I stopped by the library to pick up

Undead and Unappreciated by Mary Janice Davidson
Undead and Unreturnable by Mary Janice Davidson

for my Vampire challenge as suggested by a good friend of mine.

Then I noticed the sale side had a ton of great books for sale, so of course I went a bit overboard.. and bought about 20 which works great cause now I can review quite a few books over the next few weeks from my home without worrying about having to leave the house.

I will list them all in a bit.. but I'm a bit too busy at this very moment to take them all out of there bags.. I need to get a bigger bookcase.

A is for Afterlife

I'm part of the A to Z challenge for April so here is my first post for it.

Afterlife.. which is something almost all the books I read have in common. I love vampires, werewolves, the supernatural, so I think thats where this blog is heading..

I'm gonna focus on Vampires, Supernatural and Horror/Thrillers and Fantasy Books.. so we'll get a little bit of everything in the Fantasy/Supernatural world.

So join me in this world for a little bit of fun in the next. Stay tooned for my first review.. which should happen later today after I get back from the library and finish my world of warcraft raid (yes Im a total geek when it comes to video games.)

Blog Hop 4/1 - 4/4

Book Blogger Hop

Today's qiestion:
"Since today is April Fool's Day in the USA, what is the best prank you have ever played on someone OR that someone has played on you?"

My friends and I were cruel to each other in school. One year we woke my friend up early and dressed her up like a clown (she was one of those groggy not really awake til my coffee kinda people).. she got us back 1 by 1.. she wrapped a gift for me in air conditioning duct tape.. the gift was soap.. so i ripped up my hands and it hurt so bad.. she made my friends car into a cow by painting it with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.. but we always had a crazy time.

Today's Question is:
Q. WHAT IS THE BOOK THAT YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO ADMIT TO LOVING??

I am a pretty big Danielle Steel fan. I read every single one of her books that was out when I was in high school.. and one of her books "The Long Road Home" is still one of my favorite books of all time.

Parajunkee's Vampire Challenge.

I'm joining Parajunkee's Vampire Challenge 2011. You have to read 20 vampire books before December 2011.. I can definitely do that. I love Vampire novels.. So now off to the library to see what I can find.

Book Blog Hop March 25-28th 2011

Book Blogger Hop

March 25-28th 2011

The writing prompt from this week's Book Blogger Hop:
"If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…
which one would it be and why?"

I would love to be in the world of Sparhawk. I would love to be on his team and go around the world in search of a cure for the princess. I love the series and all the people he comes into contact with and the elements of the world.

Sparhawk is from the book series by David Eddings, the first book in the series being "The Diamond Throne" I will be reviewing it later and the rest of the series.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

The Beginning

I think I title most of my first posts the Beginning, how unoriginal of me. I know, but it is the beginning of my journey down this path. I have wanted to start a book review blog for a while.. and then I get lazy or something and never make it there.
Im gonna try to post daily.. and review more then once a week.. but I truly cant make any promises. Life sometimes gets in the way.

Well a bit about me. My name is Traci. Yet a lot of people call me Kitten.. most people I'm close to call me Kitten or Rayne.. so you can call me any, all or Hey you.. I'm not really picky. I love to read, been reading since I was barely out of diapers. Now I'm in my 20's and have a a vast love of books. I prefer thriller, fantasy, paranormal, paranormal romance, romance, drama, chick lit and just about everything. I'm willing to pick up just about anything.

I'm gonna try to review different genres and newer and older books every week so you have a chance to look at everything.. get to know a little bit from each world.

Books give you the chance to live outside your life for a short while. It's probably one of the reasons I like them so much.

Some of my favorite writers include George R R Martin ( i will review Dance with Dragons on its release date cause Im gonna get it bright and early.) Terry Goodkind, Angela Knight, Nicholas Sparks, David Eddings, Danielle Steel, just to name a few.

So expect a post tomorrow most likely not a review but at least a little something to get you paying attention.

Read a fairy tale .. let life be adventurous for a day.
